The Standard & Poor's 500 (S&P 500®) is a widely followed stock market index that measures the performance of 500 of the largest publicly traded companies in the United States, selected by S&P Dow Jones Indices. It is a market-capitalization weighted index, meaning companies with larger market values have a proportionally larger impact on the index's movement.
Launched in its current form in 1957, the S&P 500 is considered a primary benchmark for the overall health and performance of the U.S. stock market and, by extension, the broader U.S. economy. It represents approximately 80% of the total available U.S. equity market capitalization. Investors commonly use it to gauge market trends and benchmark the performance of their own portfolios.
